The Ideal Morning Skincare Routine

The morning skincare routine is about protection. Throughout the day, your skin receives damage from the sun, allergens, cosmetic products, and other environmental irritants. Your morning skincare routine should be dedicated to keeping your skin healthy.

We recommend the following basic steps:

  • Cleansing – remove any oil or grime from sleep and prepare your skin to face the day ahead.
  • Toning – toners brighten and smooth skin. Take care when choosing toners as they can be drying, especially for those with sensitive skin. Additionally, some cleansers have a toner built in, so check the ingredients of your cleanser to avoid doubling up on toner. If you have very dry or sensitive skin, you may only want to apply toner once a day in the evenings.
  • Treating/Topical Medications – whether you have a chronic skin condition or a specific problem area you want to address, you should apply any treatments and serums geared toward improving skin health after cleansing and toning but before you moisturize.
  • Moisturizing – in the morning, you should apply a good face cream and neck cream. If your eyes are a problem area, you may want to include a light eye cream in the morning, but most people do well with just one eye cream application in the evening.
  • Protecting – apply sunscreen every day to avoid immediate damage from the sun like burns as well as long-term skin damage like fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and even skin cancers.

The Ideal Evening Skincare Routine

Nighttime skincare is all about nourishing and healing the skin after your day. You should use gentle, soothing products.

Specifically, you should take the following skincare steps in the evenings:

  • Cleansing – use a makeup remover to gently take off any cosmetic products. Then, use a gentle cleanser to remove the dirt, oil, or debris from your day.
  • Toning – if you have very dry skin, you may want to skip the morning dose of toner and just apply toner in the evenings. Otherwise, toner can usually be applied in the morning and evening to keep skin bright and balanced.
  • Treating – nighttime treatments and serums should be soothing and healing. You don’t want to add any unnecessary irritation to the skin in the evenings. Nighttime is also the recommended time to use retinol products since sun exposure can inactivate these products.
  • Moisturizing – you should use a deeply moisturizing night cream to restore skin hydration and avoid drying out the skin overnight. You should also apply a good eye cream and neck cream.

Our Recommended Products for Your Skincare Routine & How to Apply Them

As you develop your skincare routine, you need to incorporate the right products and use them in the right order. While each person should talk to their dermatologist to develop a unique skincare routine, there is an easy way to determine what order to apply your products. Most dermatologists recommend layering skincare products from the thinnest to the thickest. In most cases, this will ensure you’re applying products that need to be absorbed into the skin (like antioxidants and serums) first, followed by products that create a protective barrier on top of the skin (like moisturizing emollients and humectants).

We recommend the following skincare products applied in this order:
